Theory class

Many new drivers are focused on simply passing their theory test so they can move on to their practical exam. However, obtaining a better understanding of the theory behind driving can help you become a better driver by increasing your motoring knowledge and helping you avoid accidents.

Now it is possible to take theory classes to expand your knowledge and ensure that you are well prepared for life on the road.

What do theory classes cover?

A theory training course gives you the chance to get away from simply reading lists of rules and instead you can actively participate in a dedicated training classroom with official, updated Driving Standards Agency (DSA) training materials, group revision in all areas and test simulations using high quality flat screen technology.

Some of the areas covered include:

Hazard perception

The hazard perception element was introduced into the theory test in November 2002 with the aim of reducing deaths and serious injuries on the UK`s roads by 40 per cent by 2010. As part of the test you are presented with 14 video clips featuring every day road scenes and in each clip there is at least one developing hazard which you must identify and respond to suitably.

It`s not just about preparing you for the theory test, however. Learning hazard perception is vital when you`re driving so you can identify potential problems before they occur. Remember that no matter how good your own driving is, you cannot always account for the actions of others - so being well prepared for every danger is sensible. Training can help you plan ahead, prioritise, cut down risks and respond to hazards.

Driver attitude

Knowing how to keep your cool in testing situations can make all the difference in avoiding accidents. A survey by Sainsbury`s Finance in 2009 found that four per cent of motorists admitted to inflicting road rage on other drivers, but it`s not just in these extreme circumstances where your behaviour could affect other drivers - tailgating, excessive speeding and failing to be courteous could all harm your driving performance and increase the likelihood of an accident.

Car maintenance

Many accidents occur as a result of faults with the vehicle itself rather than anything that the driver is specifically doing wrong. So learning about the basics of car maintenance - including oil checks and tyre pressure and tread depth examinations, as well as when to take your car for a service, could help you avoid both accidents and breakdowns.

The history of road signs

Understanding the meaning of road signs is vital if you are to pass both your theory and practical driving tests. Having a better understanding of their history can give you the background knowledge you need to drive with more confidence on unfamiliar roads.

Case studies

Another aspect of driving theory classes is to look at case studies to help you gain a better knowledge of how theory applies to real situations. For example, the course may look at a typical traffic accident and attempt to apportion blame to create a better understanding of how the incident could have been avoided.

Could completing the course help lower car insurance rates?

Several car insurance companies offer discounts to drivers that complete advanced driving courses such as the Pass Plus. Consequently, it is well worth mentioning to your insurer that you have taken driving theory classes as the provider may view you as a more responsible driver who is less likely to make a claim and lower premiums as a result - the premiums you receive are dependent on the provider`s criteria and will normally factor in your driving history, your address, the vehicle you drive, your personal circumstances and your annual mileage.

Remember that some insurance companies offer learner drivers car insurance which won`t tie you into a long term contract while you are learning to drive giving you the flexibility of looking around for a cheaper deal once you have passed your test.
